After 22 years, it is now possible to begin to assess the effects, intended and unintended, of the 21 year-old drinking age. Choose Responsibility is a new, non-profit organization, created to encourage informed and dispassionate public debate about the role of alcohol in the lives of our country's young adults. John McCardell, president emeritus of Middlebury College and founder of Choose Responsibility, and several of his research assistants, will share some of the findings of their white paper, "The Effects of the 21 year-old Drinking Age," as a way to initiate the desired public discussion, and will welcome questions and comments from the audience. Recognizing that value involves experiencing pleasure or pain is critical to understanding the psychology of value. But hedonic experience is not enough. Dr. HIggins proposes that it is also necessary to recognize that strength of engagement can contribute to experienced value through its contribution to the experience of motivational force -- an experience of the intensity of the force of attraction to or repulsion from the value target. Tory Higgins is the Stanley Schachter Professor of Psychology at Columbia University. Lunch served. RSVP required.

Among the most durable findings in all of the social, behavioral and policy sciences is the association between household poverty and non-optimal human development. Scientific advances in understanding both the effects of poverty on human development and the effects of social experiments on poverty and human development can be used to support reasoned action. But ethical and political challenges must be addressed head on to complement reasoned action with principled action.
Lawrence Aber is the Nannerl O. Keohane Distinguished Visiting Professor, an ongoing collaboration between Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Aber is a professor of applied psychology and public policy at the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University, where he is also the academic director of the Institute for Human Development and Contextual Change. David Olds will summarize the results of the Nurse-Family Partnership, a 30-year program of research aimed at preventing a host of health and developmental problems, including child maltreatment, in children from low-income, socially disadvant-aged families. In this program, nurses visit mothers bearing first children, beginning as early in pregnancy as possible and continuing through the child's second birthday. The nurses in this program have three major goals: 1) to improve the outcomes of pregnancy by helping women improve their prenatal health; 2) to improve children's subsequent health and development by helping parents provide more competent care of their children; and 3) to improve parents' economic self-sufficiency by helping develop a vision for their futures and helping them make smart choices about staying in school and finding work. The program has been tested in three separate randomized controlled trials with different populations, living in different contexts, and at different points in our country's history.
David Olds is professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Preventive Medicine, and Nursing at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where he directs the Prevention Research Center for Family and Child Health. He is the winner of the 2007 Stockholm Prize in Criminology. Lunch served. RSVP required.

Since its inception in 1936, the William T. Grant Foundation has had a remarkable constancy of purpose: to further the understanding of human behavior through research. The Foundation's mission focuses on improving the lives of youth ages 8 to 25 in the United States. They invest primarily in high quality empirical studies. Its current research interests are understanding and improving social settings such as families, schools, peer groups, and organizations, and how these social settings affect youth. The Foundation's interests also focus on the use and influence of scientific evidence in policy and practice.

Antonio Morgan-Lopez has designed a statistical model that allows drug treatment researchers to use traditional drug treatment groups for their studies and to run trials. Due to the fluid, ever-changing membership of these groups (e.g., AA and NA), researchers have had to rely on individual therapy sessions or create groups with controlled membership to ensure valid outcomes. Hear how Dr. Morgan-Lopez' model works and how it provides the same validation without the expenses (time and money) involved in setting up and running one-on-one therapy sessions and controlled groups.
Dr. Morgan-Lopez is a research quantitative psychologist with RTI International. He has over 10 years of experience in the development and application of quantitative methods in prevention and treatment research. He has extensive experience in the etiology and prevention of mental illness and substance use among adolescents, with a particular interest in methodological issues in substance abuse and alcoholism treatment research.
