Professional Development Initiative

In 2003, with the support of the North Carolina Education Cabinet, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation launched the Professional Development Initiative (PDI).  The Initiative's purpose is to help the state enhance its system of professional development for preK-12 teachers.

The PDI established an implementation work group that produced a Proposal for Action.

As of November 2006, the PDI is focusing on two key components of the Proposal for Action:

1) Development of the first-ever statewide directory of professional development opportunities for North Carolina's preK-12 teachers and
2) The establishment of the professional development online
resource center, a web-based source of information regarding the content and quality of professional development opportunities.

Numerous presentations about the Professional Development Initiative have been made to professional development stakeholders:

-North Carolina Education Cabinet
-State Board of Education
-Deans of the University of North Carolina Schools of Education
-Deans and program directors of the education programs at North Carolina's private colleges and universities
-Representatives of the state's community colleges
-North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards Commission
-North Carolina Public School Forum
-Numerous other stakeholder groups
