Spencer Predoctoral Program

Discipline-Based Scholarship in Education (DBSE)

The Spencer Predoctoral Program, sponsored by The Spencer Foundation, is one of the many ways the Center for Child and Family Policy is bridging the gap between research and public policy to improve the lives of children and families. Since 2001, the program has been working with students from Duke University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to assist discipline-based scholars in conducting and presenting “research to policy” projects on educational issues.

The goals of the Spencer Predoctoral Program:

1. To attract talented, discipline-based doctoral students into education research careers and to provide them with the necessary training to embark on independent programs of educationally-relevant research. We focus our efforts on attracting graduate students from Psychology, Sociology and Economics at Duke University and from Social Work at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

2. To enhance the skills of participating Spencer faculty members to conduct cutting-edge research on educational issues, policies, and practices. In addition to enhancing the breadth of knowledge of participating faculty through seminars and scholarly meetings, we will also increase faculty cross-discipline collaboration on problems of mutual interest.

3. To shape an emerging research domain linking educational science to educational policy and practice. To accomplish this goal, we will structure the program to connect research questions to questions of public policy. We also will provide our trainees and faculty with the opportunity to acquire the translational skills to communicate the fruits of their science to practitioners of educational administration and service delivery.

The product of this program will be a new generation of disciplined-based scholars in education policy research and a new field of inquiry that brings this research into the forefront of university scholarship.
