The Administrative Core creates an intellectual climate that brings together economists, psychologists, neuropharmacologists, sociologists, political scientists, environmental researchers, psychiatrists, and public policy analysts with practitioners and policy makers for the purpose of translating basic science into prevention science. The core supports the Executive Committee as well as external Scientific Advisors and Practice Advisors who help shape the Center's direction.
GOALS
The primary aims of the Administrative Core are:
- To provide leadership for the Executive Committee and Center
- To nurture an intellectual climate of rigorous creativity
- To train postdoctoral fellows and faculty members to become leading scholars in transdisciplinary prevention science
- To administer various training programs for undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in the field of prevention
- To administer the Center's programs and budget
- To evaluate the Center
PROJECTS
The Administrative Core continues to maintain and expand the Center's intellectual community through facilitating:
- Multidisciplinary working groups
- Nationally prominent visiting speakers. These speakers have included: Denise Kandel, Martin Fishbein, and E. Tory Higgins
- An active speaker series that has included:
- “The Implicit Influence of Significant Others on Substance Abuse,” featuring Tanya Chartrand
- “Turning Points and Developmental Disturbances: A Developmental Perspective on Substance Use During the Transition to Adulthood,” featuring John Schulenberg
- “Mechanisms and Marijuana: Treatment as Prevention in Young Adult Marijuana Users,” featuring Kathleen Carroll
- “ Why Mature Smokers Do Not Quit,” featuring Frank Sloan
- Meetings with members of science and practice advisory boards
- Preparation of research briefs
- Maintaining the Center website
